Mike McWherter and Family - Owners
Mike McWherter and his wife, Mary Jane, live in Jackson, TN, where they own and operate a large beverage distribution company. They have two children, Walker and Bess. Walker recently graduated from law school and now works in the family business. Bess has made her home in Washington, D.C. and currently works at the U.S. House of Representatives. Mike inherited the farm in 2011 after the passing of his father, Governor Ned Ray McWherter, and in 2013, he decided to bring his father’s dream to reality. What started out as 20 cows has now grown into nearly 300 cows, and is building a reputation as a premier destination for seedstock and commercial cattleman in need of superior genetics.
Patterson Freeman – Manager
Patterson became the Manager of McWherter Farms in the 2013, and has overseen the growth and development of the farm since day one. Patterson has a strong background in the Angus business from being actively involved in his family’s cattle operation. After graduating from Mississippi State University with a degree in Beef Cattle Production, he worked as Ranch Manager at Cottage Farm Beefmaster. When Mike presented him the chance to build an Angus operation from nearly the ground up, he knew it was an opportunity that could not be passed up. Patterson and his wife, Kaitlin, live in Bradford, TN, with their two sons, Bo and Baker.
Colt Cardwell – Herdsman
Colt joined the McWherter Farms family in the fall of 2019. With the rise in cattle numbers and overall growth of the farm, the need for a qualified herdsman became imperitive. Colt was raised and trained as an avid horseman and has a strong passion for agriculture. He has worked in many sectors of the agriculture industry including: equine, row crop, seed sales, and now cattle. Colt provides a well-rounded agriculture mind, and strong work ethic, and a vision that aligns perfectly with McWherter Farms. Colt, his wife Precious, and their three children, AJ, Birdie, and Saige, live in Palmersville, TN.
